At the end of the game, the players were exhausted; the fans were exhausted; even the officials were exhausted. Bedford Girl’s Basketball team defeated Amesbury, 61-58. to advance to the MIAA Girls Basketball – North Division 3 semi-finals.
The score seesawed back and forth through the whole game as neither team could take and hold a lead. It was a battle of Amesbury’s powerful 3-pointer aerial assault vs. Bedford’s ground and pound, shoot in the paint style.
Amesbury made eight 3-pointers compared to Bedford’s three. Free throws made the difference as Amesbury shot 8 for 18 (44.4%) against Bedford’s 18 for 24 (75%).
Joelle DeLia was the Bucs high scorer with 20 points, including 10 in the 4th quarter.
Co-Captain Annie Cowen was second in scoring with 16 points, including to clutch free throws with 15.5 seconds on the clock to give Bedford a three-point lead.
Co-Captain Jenn Rennich hit a key three-point shot with a minute and a half left in the game to give the Bucs a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Jenn was also the key contributor to breaking Amesbury’s oppressive full court press.
In the Semifinals, the Buccaneers will play the winner of the Saturday night game between Shawsheen Valley Regional Technical School and Boston Latin Academy.
