Letter to the Editor, March 11, 2108: Thank You to the Voters!

March 11, 2018

By Margot Fleischman

A sincere thank-you to every Bedford resident who took time out of their day on Saturday to vote in our municipal election. I know I speak on behalf of all the candidates when I say we are extremely appreciative of everyone’s participation.

I particularly want to thank the newly-registered 18-year-old voters who came out to cast a ballot for the very first time. So many of the issues we care about most can be affected at the local level, and it was exciting to see young people get engaged with their democracy right here at home. I know how proud their parents were to watch them take this important step into adulthood.

It was also great to see how many parents came with their younger children to show them the importance of voting. Creating a life-long habit of civic participation starts with those first visits to the polls!

I encourage Bedford voters of all ages to take advantage of their next opportunity to participate in local government by attending Town Meeting on March 26 and March 27 at 7:30 pm at Bedford High School. There are many important issues and projects that we will have to vote on, including the Davis Road Boardwalk, zoning changes for the housing development on Pine Hill Road and for the Great Road Business District, the addition to the Davis School, and, of course, the entire Fiscal Year 2019 town budget.

Finally, I want to thank the citizen-volunteers and our dedicated town staff whose efforts keep Bedford going each and every day. We are fortunate to live in such a well-run town, and our continued success is due to how well we pull together to make it all happen.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the residents of Bedford, and I look forward to working on the issues that make a difference to the quality of life for everyone in the town.
