Letter to the Editor, March 7, 2018: Is the Proposed Davis Road Boardwalk for Bicyclists?

By Terry Gleason, Bedford Bicycle Committee

The Davis Rd Boardwalk Proposal: Why doesn’t it include bicyclists, and why are residents being misled?

On Thursday, March 15 the Bedford Friends of the Bikeway and the Bicycle Advisory Committee will co-host a discussion about Warrant Article 17 which requests funding for an $880K viewing deck for the Cedar Swamp and a 6-foot-wide pedestrian boardwalk.

The project has been presented to groups and in the Warrant as providing “safe passage for pedestrians and bicyclists to … Town Center.” But, in fact, a 6-foot-wide path cannot be used as a shared-use path. It is nowhere wide enough to meet safety standards for a bicyclist and pedestrian boardwalk.

If you believe bicyclists of all ages and abilities deserve ‘safe passage to Town Center,’ please join the March 15 discussion, at 7:30 pm in the first floor Conference Room at Town Hall.

If you are unable to attend, please send us your comments via our Davis Rd Boardwalk Survey.
