Planning Board Hears Lane and Davis School Plans

By  Lauren Ennis

At the Planning Board meeting on March 20, the School Committee presented proposed expansion projects at both the Lane and Davis elementary schools.

At Lane, the proposed plan would increase the parking lot from its current size of 99 spaces to 124 spaces.

The committee emphasized that the current parking lot contains the exact number of spaces necessary for the school’s present staff, and as such, holds no spaces for visitors or any future additional staff. The committee then explained its plan to expand the parking lot’s bus loop in order to accommodate the 14 buses that transport students to and from the school each day.  The expansion plan also includes improvements to the school grounds, such as the creation of an orchard outside the cafeteria and the planting of additional trees along the bus route. While the Planning Board expressed concern about the potential effects upon neighboring properties, they also praised the committee’s efforts to address neighbor concerns and to take proactive measures.

At Davis School, the expansion plan includes the addition of 13 classrooms, the creation of school courtyards, and other renovations throughout the school.

The plan would also add 30 parking spaces to better accommodate the school’s increased staff and alleviate the traffic jams that occur during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. The committee emphasized their efforts to address residents’ concerns as well as their consideration of previous suggestions made by the Planning Board. The next Planning Board meeting will be held on April 10at 7:30 pm at Bedford Town Hall and is open to the public.
