Davis Road Boardwalk Approved at ATM Session 2

By Lauren Ennis

One of the most anticipated articles at the continuation of Annual Town Meeting on March 28 was Article 17, which proposed a boardwalk along Davis Road.

The boardwalk, which is planned to be 6 feet wide and 1,175 feet long, would allow for bicycle and pedestrian access on a stretch of Davis Road from Patricia Circle to Revolutionary Ridge. The area has been a challenge due to the sharp drop-offs into ditches on both sides of the road and the surrounding wetlands.

The discussion surrounding the project began as early as 1996 in an effort to address public safety and access concerns, but it is only now that a fully developed plan has come before Town Meeting. The boardwalk would allow bicyclists and pedestrians a safer alternative to walking along the narrow stretch of Davis Road, while also providing residents access to local preservation land. Some residents expressed concerns about the possible effect of the boardwalk upon local wildlife, but many residents, particularly young residents, praised the project. The Article ultimately passed unanimously to audience applause.

The Town Meeting has been continued to Monday, April 2, 2018, at 7:30 pm at the Bedford High School Auditorium.
