Search for New Town Manager Begins a New Era for Bedford

By Meredith McCulloch

On Tuesday night, April 10, 2018, the process of finding a successor for Town Manager Richard Reed began. Reed is retiring from the position of Town Manager in August after 30 years of service.  Representatives from the search firm Municipal Resources, Inc. Alan Gould, Robert Mercier, and Reginald (Buzz) Stapczynski met with the Selectmen to review the process. (Selectman William Moonan was not able to attend.)

Leading the effort will be a search committee appointed by the Selectmen that will consist of two Selectmen and five citizens at large.  Applications for service on the search committee have closed and participants will be announced soon.

The search is expected to take about eleven weeks from advertisement of the position to an appointment, concluding by the third week of June before school is out. The hope is to make an appointment by early July.

Advertising will be broad. The opening will appear in the Boston Globe, other large New England newspapers, and International City Managers Association listings. The consultants advised that there are many towns looking for leadership at this time. However, Bedford should be competitive because of its reputation as a good town.

Candidates will first be interviewed on the phone and a select number in person.  The identity of applicants will be kept private until the list is down to three candidates.  Once a single candidate is chosen, there will be a daylong opportunity for the candidate to meet with department heads and interested citizens, after which an appointment will be made.

The hope is to find and appoint someone who will remain for many years.  Alan Gould of Municipal Resources was encouraging, “Bedford is not a stepping stone, but a destination.”
