The Bedford Garden Club is proud to announce the winners of the Bedford Garden Club Scholarships awarded in 2018: Rachelle Shao and Lexia Cicone.

Rachelle Shao

Rachelle Shao has chosen to study environmental science at Brown University and to research the links between human actions and the environment, working to ensure a comfortable future for everyone around the earth.   Also an accomplished artist, she finds it is important to preserve the natural beauty that inspires her.  “I want to continue making art pieces I find as beautiful as the stars.”

Rachelle has expanded her interests through music, art, working as a volunteer at Emerson Hospital and the VA Hospital and participating in the Environmental Club, Tufts University Biomedical Engineering Internship, the Science Team and Science Bowl, and Women of Science Programs.  She received the Harvard Book Award, Bausch and Lomb Science Award, Scholastic Art and Writing National Silver Medal, and PHE International for Youth.

Lexia Cicone

Lexia Cicone is planning to attend Boston University to pursue a double major in Chemistry and Earth and Environmental Science.   Lexia explains that although these are not new sciences, they still hold many yet-to-be-revealed secrets.

Lexia’s interests through her high school years include the Science Team, Soccer and Volleyball and the Amnesty International Club.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, received the Worcester Art Museum Special History Day Award, and participated in the National History Fair competition and the Science Olympiad.
