A Letter to the Editor, August 20, 2018: Supporting Quentin Palfrey, Candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the September 4 Democratic Primary

By John Mitchell

I’m writing to express my support for my friend, Quentin Palfrey, candidate for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor, in the upcoming primary election on Tuesday, September 4th.

Quentin and I have known each other since we lived in the same dormitory during our freshman year at Harvard. In classes together, I recognized him as a sharp thinker. Socially, I got to know him as a caring person. He is one of the most decent and honorable people I know; the kind of person we need more of in government.

I support Quentin because he cares about problems that must be solved if America is to remain a vibrant nation where everyone can reach their potential. He has taken a strong stand against the increasing levels of economic inequality in the Commonwealth and beyond, and has worked tirelessly to develop a comprehensive approach to poverty alleviation, including labor and workforce development, more resources for public education, criminal justice reform, and increasing access to affordable healthcare.

Now, more than ever, it is important to elect competent leaders with actual governing experience to federal, state, and local office. Quentin has devoted his life to public service, and the positions he has held demonstrate his knowledge of and commitment to issues that matter. He was Deputy General Counsel for Strategic Initiatives in the U.S. Commerce Department, Chief of the Health Care Division of the Mass. Attorney General’s office (where he helped implement the groundbreaking health care reforms that became a model for the federal Affordable Care Act), and President Obama’s Senior Advisor for Jobs and Competitiveness in the White House Office for Science and Technology Policy.

If you are eligible to vote in the Democratic primary—either as a party member or an independent—I encourage you to vote for Quentin Palfrey and to give him the chance to become our next Lieutenant Governor.
