When the Post Office sent out an invitation to an Open House on August 16, The Citizen dropped in and learned that Bedford has a new Postmaster who has been on duty since February.

David Zaher has dual responsibilities: he is also the Postmaster at Hanscom AF Base and divides his time between the two locations.  Zaher took up his post here upon the retirement of former Postmaster Bill Booker.

Zaher told The Citizen he hopes to get involved with people in the community.  Asked about the trailer, which housed our PO for nearly two years during construction of the Bedford Marketplace, Zaher said he is familiar with that situation as a facility in Lowell once had to use a trailer.  Zaher is a career postal employee, previously serving as Supervisor of Customer Services at locations in Lowell.

He reminded The Citizen that the Bedford situation is unique in that the carriers themselves come out of the Burlington PO, so they fall under that jurisdiction.  This can lead to some logistical problems in package delivery.  And as community organizations know all too well, bulk mailing must be taken to the Burlington facility for processing.

As Zaher said, “we are just a retail unit here, with postal boxes-space is very limited “

Longtime Bedford residents will recall that before the demolition of the old shopping center and the development of the current Bedford Marketplace, there was a processing facility in a substantial brick building on the corner where b.Good restaurant now stands, in addition to a retail unit on the other side of the driveway.  Collection boxes were marked “Local” and “Outside,” which meant that mail going to a Bedford address could be processed in-house. Under the current arrangement, local mail goes to Burlington and then is returned to Bedford, which can add as much as two days to delivery time.

Zaher said a goal of the Open House was to let people know that the Post Office is actively hiring. For information on job opportunities, go to USPS.com/Careers.
