Editor’s Note: Remember to visit the new playground during your visit to Lane School on August 29!

After the existing playground at the Lane School was removed due to structural concerns, the Bedford Grounds Division has been working this summer to install a new playground and updated swing set.  The original structure, built in 1999, was out of compliance with new safety regulations and DPW was unable to obtain replacement parts.  The new 4,000 square foot play unit was designed by staff from the Lane School, Grounds Division, Recreation, and the PTO.  The new playground was manufactured by M.E. O’Brien and installed by Forte Construction.

The elements of the play structure were carefully chosen to provide interesting and challenging activities for the school-aged kids at Lane.  They include spinners, slides, ladders and climbing poles as well as hands-on elements.

Dennis Freeman, Grounds Operations Manager, strongly supported the use of poured-in-place rubber to improve handicap accessibility and reduce wear areas at the high-use zones.  Freeman added, “We’re looking forward to the start of school to see the reaction of the kids as they manipulate the new play structure.”  The DPW is also replacing the ever popular swings as part of the capital improvement project, funded mainly by Community Preservation with additional funds from the Lane School budget.
