Letter to the Editor, August 28, 2018: As Temperatures Soar, ‘Shave the Peak’ Between 3 and 7 pm

By Renu Bostwick

Editor’s Note: The team at Mass Energy has suggested that Wednesday might be the biggest peak we’ve seen in New England since 2013. Please help Bedford to do its part to keep our electric demand low on hot afternoons.

Are you also concerned about the number of increasing days we’re getting with temperatures over 90 degrees? You can help to reduce the carbon emissions that are leading to extreme weather, especially on peak electricity use days! On high use days, electricity is generated by the dirtiest fuels.

Your local Bedford Mothers Out Front team is pleased to share with you the Shave the Peak program by Mass Energy Consumers Alliance, where they alert all of us to peak electricity use days and we take action to reduce our use at those specific times. Please see their message below for more information and ideas.

Mothers Out Front is a national organization, started in MA, that works urgently for a livable climate for all children. The Bedford team has been helping to raise individual awareness and action since our team firmly believes that individual action done collectively can bring about the necessary carbon emissions reductions needed for a livable climate.

Thank you for using as little electricity as possible over the next few hot afternoons! We can all do our part!

Suggestions from the Mass Energy Consumer Alliance

It may be back-to-school time, but summer’s not over yet. This week’s hot temperatures will cause extremely high electricity demand across the region: that means it’s time to Shave the Peak.
But Shaving the Peak doesn’t have to be a chore! You can reduce electricity usage by:

  • Charging electric vehicles, laptops, phones, or other devices before the peak begins at 3 pm and waiting until after 7 pm to plug back in
  • Delaying use of laundry machines, dishwashers, microwaves, or electric stoves until after peak has ended
  • Pre-cooling your home or office: turn on the AC before the peak, then rely on open windows, blinds, fans, or other low-energy ways to keep things cool

Share how you helped Shave the Peak with us on social media or by email!  Find more ways to Shave the Peak on our website.
