Wednesday, August 22, was a gloomy day but despite the weather, Bedford’s Recycling Coordinator Ed McGrath reported that 59 residents visited the Compost Center to dispose of grass clippings, leaves, and small branches. “Nine came during the first half hour,” McGrath added, “with another dozen between 9 and 10 am.” An average Wednesday, with decent weather, draws an average of 70 residents.
The Compost Center is open and staffed by either Ed McGrath or a DPW staff person, from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm on Wednesdays, and from 8 am until 1 pm on Saturdays.
After experiences where non-resident landscapers ‘delivered’ truckloads of yard waste and tree trunks, and at least one resident abandoned regular trash and hazardous waste, the facility is locked unless it is staffed. Bedford has also instituted a sticker system to identify resident vehicles; the stickers are free and available either at the DPW building or when visiting the Compost Center.
