The 2018 winner of the annual Bedford Arts and Crafts Society (BACS) scholarship is Bedford High School graduate Sophia Wilson. Louise Banner of BACS presented the scholarship at the Citizens Scholarship Foundation awards ceremony in May.

Sophia will be attending the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she plans a double major in animal science and fine art. “In the future I see myself merging my interests in animals and art together to create my career. It’ll probably be something like documentary work,” she says.

The Bedford Arts and Crafts Society will showcase additional examples of Sophia’s work at the BACS Regional Art Show on September 21 and 22 at the Town Center Building. Sophia has always loved drawing, especially drawing faces in a semi-realistic or realistic way. And she’s always exploring new mediums and trying to figure what works best. Her current preference is pastels. Sophia reveals a fun fact about herself: that she has always drawn on “pretty much any test quiz or homework assignment.”

At the Regional Art Show, Sophia “will be displaying mostly my senior artwork for my last year at Bedford High. The inspiration for my portrait work comes mostly from real references or my imagination. I’m inspired and fascinated by the human body, particularly the face. I’ve always loved drawing people, and I’ve recently been trying to get my semi-realistic style to reflect real facial expressions and color value. The artwork that you’ll see displayed is a mix of sketches and pastel portraits, and they have a randomness that I like.”

The public is cordially invited to drop by and see Sophia’s work and to view the entries in the BACS annual show at the Town Center Building. The exhibition is open on Friday, September 21, 2:00–4:00 p.m., and Saturday, September 22, 9:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
