The Bedford Historical Society begins its 2018-19 season with a program honoring Bedford High School students who participated in the National and Massachusetts History Day competitions and a talk by Society President Don Corey titled “What’s in Bedford’s Attic.”

The event will begin at 7:15 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 26 in Upper Fellowship Hall of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 25 The Great Rd.  After a refreshment period from 7:15 – 7:45 pm and short announcements by President Corey, the speakers for the evening will begin.

The Society’s programs are free and the public is always welcome.  Plenty of parking is available in the Town’s parking lots on Mudge Way, behind the church.  A walkway leads from Mudge Way around the Fellowship Hall building to the red double doors at the entrance.

Each year the Society honors the Bedford High students and teacher-advisors involved in the History Day program, a nationwide competition designed to promote the teaching and learning of history.  Bedford High has participated in this program for 18 years.

Students invited by the Society to briefly describe their projects are:

  • Eran Zelixon, whose project on the Terezin concentration camp earned a 1st place in the District History Day completion and a 2nd place in the State HD competition, qualifying him for the National History Day competition.
  • Samantha Gallant and Bernice Lai’s group documentary on the 1965 Watts Riot: 3rd place at District’s; honorable mention at State.
  • Chloe Byun, Kristen Hekimian and Georgia Pitner’s website on Australian Aborigines: 1st place at District’s; honorable mention at State.
  • Sydney Hoiseth and Lucy Santiago’s exhibit on the AIDS epidemic: 3rd at District’s; honorable mention at State.
  • Omar Al-Adhami, Matthew Carluccio, Nathaniel Kang, Ryan Lobo and Ryan Richard’s website on Ping-Pong Diplomacy: 2nd place at Districts as well as the Worcester Bravehearts Award for best project related to sports history; also a special sports history award at State.

Following the History Day student presentations and awards, President Corey’s show-and-tell program about “What’s in Bedford’s Attic “will include an overview of Bedford’s history from prehistoric times to the 20th Century, highlighted with various artifacts from the Society’s collections.  The historic artifacts help people of all ages relate more closely with events in Bedford’ history.

Mr. Corey, re-elected in May as the Society’s President also serves on the Town of Bedford’s Historic Preservation Commission.  He is a member of the town’s Community Preservation Committee, a Director of both the Friends of the Job Lane House and the Bedford Historical Society and a past Bedford Selectman, Planning Board member and Citizen of the Year.
