Multiple reports of bear visitors in West Bedford came into the Bedford Police around dusk on Monday, September 24.

Bedford’s Animal Control Officer Michael Leskouski typically responds to calls about stray dogs, but on Monday evening, along with the Environmental Police, he responded to bear sightings in West Bedford, after ursine visits along Concord Road, Davis Road, at the intersection of Hilda and Mae Roads, then Glenridge, the end of Notre Dame, and finally Battle Flagg Road.

Leskouski said, “People were everywhere tonight – the word was out about the bear.” The officers didn’t want to frighten it, possibly causing a public safety incident, and kept watch until the bear ambled back into the woods, presumably for the night.

In an interview at the Bedford Police Station later Monday evening, Officer Leskouski reminded residents that at this time of year, bears eat as much as they can in preparation for their long winter naps. “They head for bird feeders and compost bins,” Leskouski noted. “People really need to bring their bird feeders inside since the seed is a magnet for the bears although plenty of wild food is available at this time of year.”

It’s also important to keep pets inside or on leashes if out walking.  Click this link to read the hints for dealing with bears posted by The Bedford Citizen last week.

Last week’s Bedford visiting bear is thought to have headed west, into Concord and Lincoln, then circling back into Lexington near Minuteman Technical High School. And a Putnam Road resident found what he believed to be bear scat in his lawn on Saturday. Unless it is extremely fleet of foot, the single bear may instead be several bears. And there are cubs, according to one Bedford report and a Lexington Police Department Tweet.
