September 21, 2018 ~ Letter to the Editor: The Importance of Civil Discourse

September 21, 2018

By Alexis Weisz

Thank you, Peter, for your Letter to the Editor.  I remember what a difficult time Chris had making the decision he did, but in the end he thought he was making the right decision as a member of the HDC.  Chris took the backlash of his decision in stride, as he knew he needed more information before approving the solar panels, in order to do right in his role as a member of the HDC.  I did not take the backlash as well as Chris. I knew Chris did his best to make an informed decision and I was saddened by the lack of respect for a differing opinion, for someone volunteering their time to help preserve the Historic District.  Chris was a very thoughtful and thorough person when making a decision, I knew he did his research and did not deserve the negative backlash.

I have also seen the recent discussions on social media and in print and have been disheartened that so many people feel it is okay to be disrespectful of others and unkind in their comments.  I am sure solar panels will go up on the First Parish eventually but this should go through the process of being approved by the HDC and the town to make sure the Historic District is being preserved in a way all Bedford Citizens can be proud of.

I am sure all members of the HDC, the Selectmen and the First Parish are doing what they believe their duties are to better the Town of Bedford and beyond.  A healthy debate is expected but it should be one that is respectful to all.

Editor’s Note: The Town of Bedford’s “Guidelines for Civil Discourse” were adopted by the Violence Prevention Coalition in May 2004, and can be found on the Bedford Youth and Family Services web page. Thanks to an initiative by late Selectman Shelly Moll, the Guidelines are included in the Warrants for all town meetings.
