Town Government at Work for the Week of September 17, 2018

September 15, 2018

By Meredith McCulloch

Several board and committee meetings are interesting this week, and so is Bedford’s public meeting for the Tri-Town Efficiency and Regionalization Transit Study.

The Selectmen have a full agenda on Monday, September 17 starting with a 6:30 pm evaluation tour of the Fire Station with CDR Maguire, an architectural consultant, and following their meeting will be in executive session to consider a possible acquisition of real property. The tour of the fire department is in preparation for a presentation later in their meeting on space options for the fire station.

The Board of Assessors will make a presentation about a tax deferral option for seniors.  It would allow residents over 65 years of age to defer property tax on their primary residence until the property is sold or the owner is deceased.

The draft of a proposed policy on remote electronic participation at meetings has been shared with relevant boards and generally received a favorable reaction.  This is the second time this has been before the Selectmen, and they may vote on it Monday night.

Increased fees for a second trash receptacle and for a roll of five trash overflow bags may be increased to reflect the added costs of pickup. The new fee would be an increase from $100 to $108 for a second cart and from $7.50 to $8.00 for five overflow bags.

Community Preservation Committee meets on Tuesday, September 18 at 7:30 to will hear updates on projects they have funded and review a new six-year plan. They will hold a public hearing on their projects on September 24.

The community is particularly invited to attend the Tri-Town Efficiency and Regionalization Transit Study’s public meeting (click this link to learn more) on September 19 at 7 pm in the Reed Conference Room at Town Hall.  The meeting is a joint effort by Burlington, Bedford, and Lexington who are evaluating their transit services.

The Finance Committee is posted for a meeting on Thursday. When their agenda is posted it will be linked to the Citizen calendar.
