A Letter to the Editor, October 17, 2018: Question 2 ~ Corporations Are Not People

October 17, 2018

By Lori Reubenstein

The events of the past weeks have been emotional for many people across the Commonwealth and across the country.

On display was how people with wealth and power are allowed to behave and how the rest of us are powerless to change that. Powerful people aren’t interested in compromise or the best interests of our democracy. They are interested only in what benefits them. If talking about climate change decreases oil sales then climate change becomes an unproven hoax. If poor people start voting for more liberal candidates, then make it harder for them to vote. The Citizen’s United decision has made it legal for large corporations that have lots of money at stake to donate money to candidates in exchange for uncompromising loyalty.

We need to change this dynamic. We need to give the power of governing this country back to its citizens.

Corporations are not people. Their homes are not destroyed in massive floods or out of control fires. Their children are not forced to drink lead-laden water in Flint, MI. They do not have to choose between food and healthcare. Corporations are not the victims of school shootings.

None of these problems will be solved until we solve the money problem.

Health care, the environment, gun control, no real progress will be made until those who govern us have to answer only to the people who vote, not to those with money and privilege.

Question 2 sets up a commission to write and promote the 28th amendment to the constitution to remove big money from our political process.

Please go out and vote yes on Question 2.
