Bedford Police Offering At-Home Drug Disposal Option

October 25, 2018

Submitted on behalf of the Bedford Police Department

Chief Robert Bongiorno reports that the Bedford Police Department launched a new drug disposal initiative.

Through a partnership with the AmerisourceBergen Foundation, the Bedford Police Department now offers DisposeRx free of charge to residents. DisposeRx is an at-home method that provides residents with a way to destroy and dispose of drugs.

DisposeRx is a simple, environmentally friendly home waste disposal solution that uses non-toxic polymers to permanently physically and chemically destroy dangerous prescription drugs. DisposeRx works for powders, pills, tablets, capsules, liquids, and patches, making them inert and unavailable for illicit use or pollution.

Bedford Police are offering DisposeRx at no charge to residents, who can visit the police station to pick it up or arrange to have it dropped off at their homes. Drugs that are treated with DisposeRx can be safely thrown away with regular household trash.

“DisposeRx provides us with another critical weapon in the fight against opioid addiction and misuse,” Jail Diversion Coordinator/Clinician Alia Toran-Burrell said. “I’m grateful to have this tool available for residents, and I expect it will have a positive effect on our community as a whole.”

Chief Bongiorno and the Bedford Police Department also wish to remind residents that help is available for those suffering from a substance use disorder and that the department offers lifesaving Narcan to those in need.
