Bedford’s 2018 POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony

Bedford’s Anthony-Hunt-Hamilton American Legion Post 221, held their annual POW/MIA remembrance ceremony on Sunday, September 23, 2018. Post Legion Commander Jon ‘OC’ O’Connor, presided over the memorial in the Great Hall. Invited guests included David Spence, the commander of Bedford’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Frederick H. Sullivan Post 1628.

War II Veteran Charlie McCaffery had the honor of lighting the first recognition candle, and Selectman Mike Rosenberg offered warm recollections of his former neighbors, Irene and Roger Rivet. Roger had been a prisoner of war in WWII.

Paul Purchia who chairs Bedford’s Patriotic Holiday Committee was among those who placed miniature flags on a wreath in tribute to each of Massachusetts’s POW/MIA service members.

In concluding the ceremony, Commander O’Connor presented service pins for assistance at Legion events to past commander Gerry Hartmann, Auxiliary President Debbie Howard, and Troop 194 Scoutmaster Peter Ricci.

Ricci was honored for keeping Boy Scouts from Troop 194 involved with Veteran’s events. Troop 194 presented the colors and participated in readings at Sunday’s POW/MIA event, and the troop has supported Bedford’s annual Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Flag Day ceremonies, as well as the 2018 dedication of the Hart-Desiato Bridge over the Concord River.
