A Gloucester company-Black Earth Compost-is now offering weekly curbside pickup of food waste to Bedford residents. There is a fee to join, currently $99 for six months’ service but the company says when 300 residents sign up, that price will drop by half.  Black Earth provides (for an initial fee) a three gallon, animal-proof green curbside bin with locking lid and wheels

Tuesday is pickup day for Bedford.  Black Earth is now active in nearby towns –Lexington and Concord are already enrolled- and according to the company, the decision to begin providing service to Bedford reflects high demand from residents.  The company originally offered service to residents in its home base of Gloucester and nearby towns but has extended service more widely as interest in food composting has grown.

Since approximately 40 percent of what households throw out is estimated to be compostable, the service will reduce the amount of food waste that is now tossed into rubbish bins. This has the potential to reduce Bedford’s waste disposal costs, which are increasing. Bedford’s trash goes to a waste-to-energy incinerator in Haverhill, to make electricity. Incinerating food waste also generates greenhouse gases.

Black Earth offers subscribers a choice to receive complimentary compost in the spring for their own use or customers may opt to have the company contribute it to area farms. Black Earth says it can compost twice as much as a backyard pile and takes the work out of managing an individual compost pile.  Compostable waste includes meat bones, fish skins, food oil, pizza boxes, seafood shells, and paper towels, along with vegetable peelings and food scraps. The composting facility is located in Manchester, MA.

Black Earth also offers textile recycling as a free service.  The company says Residents may put clothing and textiles of all kinds in a white plastic bag, fastened securely to keep out moisture; place the bag alongside the green bin on pickup day.
