Letter to the Editor, October 27, 2018: A Connection to Wider Issues ~ Mourning Jerry Rabinowitz

October 27, 2018

By Rev. John Gibbons
Senior Minister, First Parish in Bedford, Unitarian Universalist

Friends…

It has recently been confirmed that Jerry Rabinowitz, brother of our parishioner Bill Rabinowitz, was killed in [Saturday’s] shootings at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh where 10 others died. Our thoughts are with Jerry’s wife Mari, with Jerry’s mother Sally, and with Bill, Chris, Jacob, and Eliot Rabinowitz and all their families. Jerry was a beloved family physician.

Sometimes we think of the world’s tragedies affecting people other than ourselves. But why? We are as vulnerable as others. Gun violence is not about other people; it is about US. WE are the victims and, as long as we tolerate the proliferation of guns, WE are the perpetrators and WE are responsible for both the horror and the solution.

At First Parish, we will remember all who have died in our annual Day of the Dead celebration in our Memorial Garden at 7 pm on Thursday, November 1.

On Thursday, November 8 at 7 pm, with the Bedford Jewish Community and the Interfaith Clergy Network, we will commemorate Kristallnacht, the 1938 “night of broken glass” that was a precursor to the Holocaust and an occasion to never again be bystanders to evil.

Today’s events are horrible and we remember Jerry Rabinowitz. We must renew our efforts to end senseless hatred, bigotry, and violence.
