As dusk settles on 45 Springs Road on Halloween, the lights will come up and the groans will begin, followed by the delighted screams of kids out for trick or treat.
Begun as a charity event more than a dozen years ago, organizers Dave Dillen and Martin Clements later brought their haunted house home to Springs Road. Which makes some sense: In a past life, the house had been Pierre Dillen’s mortuary (now known as the Bedford Funeral Home on The Great Road).
Dillen says that the enormous spider goes up early, to remind locals of the spookiness to come. The front yard becomes a graveyard, behind pillars and fences. The driveway is lined with figures (one from the original SpookyWorld), with the Amazing Talking Head and a very grabby ghoul at the end. A very protective witch guards the rear cemetery.
