The National Solar Tour is the largest grassroots solar, renewable energy and sustainable living event in the nation. Any homeowner, business, school, place of worship – anyone with solar or renewable energy – can host. The term ‘tour’ is used loosely. The intent is to allow someone interested in solar or other technologies to visit a site and see local renewable energy in action.
Ask questions of a home or business owner. Understand real-world examples of
- Reducing electricity costs
- Protection against power outages
- Financial return on investment
Each tour site may have additional technologies. As of this writing, there are 17 open houses scheduled in Massachusetts, including one in Bedford and one in Carlisle – both Saturday, October 6 from 10 am to 2 pm. If you’ve thought about solar or these other technologies, stop by to have a chat with your neighbors and gather more information!
The Bedford open house at 43 Hillside Ave will have
- 15kW solar array
- Air source heat pump
- Two electric cars plus level 2 charging
- Super insulation
- Hybrid water heaters
A house in Carlisle house is also on the tour; its solar panels face West / South-West on the house’s roof and provide nearly 100% of the family’s electrical needs. Click this link to RSVP and get directions to the Carlisle property: https://secure.everyaction.com/BDpSiEIpBkKP12NnWgbVVw2.

Reminder: The State of Massachusetts’ Global Warming Solution Act of 2008 mandates an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. The Town of Bedford recently began a Net Zero initiative to reduce carbon emission in town. As a community, we all benefit by understanding what we can do to support these goals.
