With that quote, Coach Ham summed up the long-term goal of BHS Field Hockey returning to State Tournament play at the team’s end of season banquet.

Coach Ham created a poster from the Bedford 1967 yearbook of photos from the last field hockey team to be in tournament play.  She commented that goggles, mouth-guards, and shin guards were not required back then.  During her research, she could not find any mention of the field hockey team in any of the newspaper reports that are on microfiche at the library.

Field hockey has come a long way; it got top billing on the sports page of the Bedford Minuteman this year.

“This is not a one and done, OK? This is going to be a trend.” Coach Ham proudly reminded the team. “So we scored 34 goals this season; compared to last year which was 24; which compared to the year before which was 14.  We improved 10 goals a season so next year – 44!”

The field hockey banquet always includes awards and highlights of the season.  The first time in recent memory that the team posted 4 wins in a row.  Sophomore Goalie Liz Henning had 126 saves. Nine different players scored goals, including 4 first-time field hockey players.

Awards Voted by the Team:

  • Most Improved Varsity Player – Shannon Young
  • Most Valuable Varsity Player – Julia Palazzo

DCL  All Stars

  • Julia Palazzo
  • Emily Sollecito

Coach Ham finished the evening by saying, “Next year, this team is going to be strong. I already did a headcount, because I always look to the future.  There is only one spot available on Varsity. So those of you who are hoping for it, work hard in the offseason.”

I know one photographer who can’t wait to photograph all 44+ goals next year.
