Bedford Public School Concerts in December ~ Welcoming Family, Friends, and the Community-at-Large

Submitted by POMS – Patrons of Music Students

The fall concert season at the Bedford Public Schools is in full swing! The Performing Arts Departments at Lane, JGMS, and BHS have been working hard all year, and the student musicians are ready to show off their skills to family, friends, and community members.

The BHS orchestra and concert band will perform at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 11, including selections from Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” with a special guest narrator. Prokofiev’s symphonic fairy tale tells the story of a young boy, a sinister wolf, an ill-fated duck, and a cast of other human and animal creatures, as portrayed by individual instruments within the orchestra. The orchestra will also perform the first movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, and the band will perform Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” always a holiday favorite. Mr. Jim Felker and Ms. Brianna Creamer lead the band and orchestra, respectively.

On Thursday, December 13, at 7:00 pm, all five BHS choral groups will present their fall concert. The BHS Honors Choir and BHS Concert Choir, under the direction of Ms. Katrina Faulstich, will perform selections including Brahms’s “Wondrous Cool” and Palestrina’s “Adoramus Te,” edited by Drew Collins. All three high school a cappella groups will also perform: the Rolling Tones, a mixed-gender group directed by Ms. Faulstich; the Bellachords, a student-directed treble choir led by Izzy Gitlin and Talitha Dantas; and the Bucappellas, a student group for lower voices led by BHS seniors Mason Schalick, Ben Woodward, and Liam Oates.

The fall concert season will wrap up with the youngest musicians: the Lane School band, orchestra, and choir performing on Wednesday, December 19, at 7:00 pm at BHS. Ms. Nicole O’Toole leads the Lane School band, made up of fifth graders, most of whom are just beginning to learn their instruments. Ms. Creamer leads the fourth-grade orchestra and fifth-grade orchestra, and Mr. Natan Wythe heads up the fifth-grade chorus.

The John Glenn Middle School ensembles kicked off concert season on November 29 and December 4, with performances by the instrumental ensembles and choral ensembles, respectively. A highlight of the November 29 instrumental concert was the seventh- and eighth-grade band’s masterful “rickrolling” of the audience, as their rendition of a “Pretty Little Ditty” quickly turned into Rick Astley’s classic “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The chorus concert on December 4 featured several numbers with student-led percussion, including the 7th– and 8th-grade chorus’s rendition of “Winter White Hymnal” by Robin Pecknold, as well as a rousing performance by the JGMS Rock Band.

The music students and faculty, as well as the volunteers and supporters of POMS, Bedford’s music booster organization, welcome all interested community members, family, and friends to attend the upcoming concerts. Like all performers, these students would love to have a full and attentive audience!
