After getting steamrolled by Newton South on Monday, the BHS Girls Varsity Basketball team rebounded for a win at home over Weston 50 –  43.  Rebounding was key.  Newton South kept ripping the ball out of the hands of Bedford players, but not so against Weston.

The word of the day was FEISTY.

The Bucs continued last years tradition of starting off each game slowly.  Weston Jumped out to a 17 – 5 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Looked like the Buc’s rim was covered in cellophane, as nothing seemed to go in.

But to paraphrase the great Dr. Suess, “And what happened, then? Well, in Bedford they say that the Buccaneer’s small heart grew three sizes that day. ”  Led by Seniors Joelle DeLia and Lauren Legere, Bedford caught fire and out-scored Weston 19-11 in the second quarter.

Down 24 – 28 at halftime.  Lauren Legere fired at will in the 2nd half scoring 11 of her team-leading 20 points to both tie and give the Bucs the lead for good.  Abby Monahan, who had been shutout in the first half, scored 9 points, including 2 free throws with a minute left to give Bedford a comfortable lead.

Bucs defense held Weston to 11 points in the second half by refusing to be denied rebounds.  Bucs won the game 50 – 43.

Consistency award goes to Danielle Arnold, who quietly scored 10 points, including a bucket in every quarter.

But the real hero of the game was the bench.  They were the loudest cheering bench that Bedford has ever seen.  If you want to see how a bench is supposed to cheer.  Bedford Varsity plays North Andover at the Tewksbury High School on Sunday, December 16th at 1 PM.
