Dear Friend,
Those of us at The Citizen are most grateful to our readers who have contributed to our year-end fundraising drive and to those who have supported us in more ways than I can list.
But we need more help.
I sometimes wonder how our readers imagine the work of The Citizen. We are both a formally organized corporation and a lean operation. Our Board of Directors gives advice, makes policy and participates in planning. We have established bylaws and became a nonprofit (501c3) under IRS rules. However, our operation is lean. We work from our homes, relying on telephones and Internet connections to publish The Citizen. We hold a weekly conference call and meet “face-to-face” about twice a month.
In June we will celebrate our seven-year anniversary. (It stuns us when we say it out loud, and of course, most of us are also seven years older.) We chose our name The Bedford Citizen to underscore that the paper is for and by all of the Bedford community.
We believe shared information is an essential building block for our community, but we also have our eyes on the more distant future. We aim to be publishing Bedford news for you and for your children into the future, while knowing that non-profit and for-profit news organizations die weekly.
We worry about sustainability and deliberately seek out board members and contributors from different generations. We have begun to add some paid part-time staff to supplement our many volunteer hours.
You can help.
Simply put, we need more money and more writers. There is a lot going on in our precious little town and we need help reporting it to the community,
