Digging in the Dirt – February 2019

By Stacy Kershaw

If you’re anything like me and chomping at the bit to get your hands dirty…these final days of winter are torture! Since it’s still too soon to head outside and start digging, what CAN you do?

Here are a few tips to keep you busy while your garden thaws:

1. Start Planning
Now is a good time to start thinking about adding new plants to your existing beds and maybe even digging up a new one. We’re in Zone 5, so be sure to pick plants that will do well in our Zone. Be sure to keep in mind how much sunlight areas of your yard get before committing to anything. You don’t want to put a sun-loving plant in a shady area. It’s still a pretty slow time for nurseries and a good time to get planting recommendations from local experts.

2. Prep Your Tools
Make sure they are all in tip-top shape by washing with soap and water and conditioning wood handles with mineral oil. If blades are dull, sharpen. Most hardware stores have the tools to do this.

3. Check Seed Supplies
If you have a vegetable garden, start planning now. The earlier you order seeds, the better the selection will be. The early bird gets the worm! If you start your seeds indoors, sow seeds now for early-season vegetables.

4. Keep Your Feet Firmly Planted
On mulch, stone, or gravel paths. Resist the urge to step in your garden beds or grass. The ground is super muddy and slopping around in it can be harmful to the soil!

And finally, some snapshots of Spring in my garden.
