A generous 2019 donation made by the Bedford Minuteman Memorial Trust has allowed both the Lane and Davis Schools the opportunity to enhance not only their all-school instructional book rooms but also their mentor-text libraries.

The donation was funded through the Minuteman Company’s sale of luminaries in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Bedford Minuteman Memorial Trust officers thank all the people and organizations who purchased luminaries and displayed them throughout Bedford to make this gift possible.

With this year’s gift, the schools continued to focus on purchasing books related to American history, including books on the American Revolution, early settlements, immigration, regions, and American symbols.

Other non-fiction texts introduced and explained foundational facts: What is Air Force One?, My Flag, and Dollar Bills! are non-fiction texts that allow students to learn about uniquely American topics

The Minuteman Trust purchased softcover books in sets of 12 to be used for small group reading instruction. Hardcover books to serve as mentor texts for teachers were purchased one per classroom.

All first-grade teachers will receive a hard copy of Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers as a mentor text Students will learn how the Statue of Liberty was built and delivered, as well as see how one seemingly small trait of America’s most emblematic statue carries the message of our country.

These titles were purchased in collaboration with our Social Studies Curriculum Coordinators, knowing they would support both Social Studies and English Language Arts standards.

Curating a robust, school-wide bookroom, that meets the needs of all students is an ongoing task, but with the support of the Bedford community, we continue to procure a teaching library that reflects the unique facets of our students, America, and the American experience in the global world.
