Before Annual Town Meeting considers Article 7 on Monday, several Friends of Fawn Lake shared their thoughts about one of Bedford’s amazing natural resources.

Where else can you go in Bedford to take a walk in early Spring and see ducks, turtles, swans, those pesky Canada Geese, and a beaver hut, if not the beavers themselves? It is a magical experience.

When I was growing up in Southern California we would gather on vacant lots after school with gloves, balls, bats, makeshift bases and play baseball until dark. A great experience living here has been to see kids after school bring their skates, hockey sticks, hockey pucks, old milk carton crates for goals and rink borders and play hockey until dark.

For the 27 years we have lived in Bedford and raised our children here, Fawn Lake has been at the center of our life as a family. Our sons, Sam and Abe Grainger, grew up skating and playing hockey on the Lake. They both played so well, they became varsity goalies at Bedford High School and Abe led his team to its first-ever league title. We bought a canoe to boat on Fawn Lake and had picnics on the grassy hill all summer long. The boys used their little sleds to slide down the hills in the winter and explored the trails in the summer. Clive wrapped the trees with chicken wire to save them from the beavers and every spring we clean all of the winter litter from the paths. We’ve laid in the grass and looked at the stars and served hot chocolate to the kids on the ice. We’ve sat on Mimi’s bench and remembered her and thanked her for all she gave to our town. Most of all our wonderful memories of Bedford revolve around beautiful Fawn Lake. We love her like a member of our family!

What do you like most about the lake?
I use the lake for playing ponds hockey and running the trails. I have taught my kids to fish and ice skate and a favorite memory is watching my dog try to catch fish that we release. It is an ecological asset to the community especially considering the continued development of the area. Maintaining green and blue space.

I never knew there was a lake until I moved to that side of town and I am so happy we found it. I grew up walking my dogs around the lake – it is a place of quiet but full of life. Saving the lake keeps an important piece of Bedford. The trails are the perfect size, leaving room for adventure. Being right off of the bike path too, as well as near the VA, it is a great walking place.
