Letter to the Editor, 17 March 2019: Thank you from Bill Moonan

March 18, 2019

By Bill Moonan

Thanks to all the Bedford residents who made my re-election to the position of Selectman possible: those who helped my campaign, and those who cast a vote for me on March 9.  Thanks to the many people who added their names to a letter supporting me which appeared in your publication.  Thanks to the many individuals who took the time to write personal letters supporting me.  The public support of all of you, both signers and letter-writers, was critical in my campaign.

Thanks also to those who hosted coffees for me.  I was more than pleased with the number of people who took the time and showed the interest, to attend these functions.  It was also gratifying to realize that our citizens do pay attention to what their town government is doing and have strong opinions about where we’ve been and where we’re going.

Thanks to the 91 residents who hosted my campaign yard signs, and especially to those who moved the signs before snow storms, so they wouldn’t be plowed under!  We have collected almost all the signs, but if one pops out of a snow pile, like a giant blue crocus, please contact me to pick it up!

And last, thanks to the organizations that held candidate forums and invited the public to attend.  The Democratic Town Committee, Bedford Housing Authority, Bedford Family Connection, Carlton-Willard Village, and Bedford League of Women Voters all provided the public opportunities to hear the candidates and their responses to the same questions.  These valuable meetings provided voters the chance to compare and judge the candidates in a manner not otherwise available.

During the campaign, I heard a lot about the need to address the amount of gas-fume-spewing traffic that is clogging both Bedford’s main roads and side streets.  I also heard great concern about the availability of housing into which seniors can down-size at an affordable price.  Tackling these problems will be a continuing effort over the coming years.  I, and my fellow selectmen, have already begun attacking these issues and will be working with consultants and stakeholders to help design and implement potential solutions.

Congratulations to all the candidates who won their elections – – whether contested or not – – and also to those who were unsuccessful, but were willing to stand for election and offer proposals to address some Bedford issues.

I look forward to serving with newly elected Selectman Emily Mitchell.  I am honored and humbled to serve as one of Bedford’s Selectmen and look forward to making this community even better over the next three years.  Thanks to all the Bedford residents who took the time to vote March 9th – whether they voted for me or not.  Democracy is a participatory sport, after all.
