Spring Clean-up Season ~ Compost Center Opens on April 3 ~ Curbside Yard Waste Collection from April 8 to 12

Submitted by Ed McGrath, Bedford’s Recycling Coordinator

With the weather warming up and folks beginning to get their yards ready for outdoor activities, the Department of Public Works is ready. The DPW is opening the Compost Center at 108 Carlisle Road for the season on Wednesday, April 3 and will conduct the Spring Curbside Yard Waste Collection the week of April 8.

The Compost Center will be open on selected Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on selected Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

New this year, the Compost Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on three Saturdays in May and on three Saturdays in November. The DPW recently mailed each household the 2019 schedule for the Compost Center, which is also posted on the Town’s website at www.bedfordma.gov/recycling.

Yard waste is prohibited from regular trash. Residents may compost yard waste on their own property, bring the yard waste to the Compost Center on Carlisle Road or put it curbside the week of April 8-12.

Acceptable yard waste for the Compost Center and the curbside yard waste collection consists of leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, garden trimmings, weeds and tree material up to one inch (1”) in diameter.

Only paper leaf bags, available at a variety of stores, are allowed to be dropped off at the Compost Center. For the curbside collection, residents should place their yard waste out in paper bags or open barrels with no lids on Monday, April 8. Any yard waste in plastic bags will be left behind.

At the Compost Center, residents should empty plastic trash bags or containers of yard waste and bring them home for reuse.

Tree limbs more than one inch (1”) in diameter can be placed in the brush pile at the Compost Center. These will not be collected in the curbside collection.

Anyone interested in composting at home can purchase a Compost Bin for $45 from the Department of Public Works at 314 Great Road, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The DPW also has kitchen scrap buckets available for $7.00 each.

Editor’s Note: The Compost Center schedule will be posted later this weekend
