Bedford Seeks B&M Land To Relieve Traffic Snags

Submitted by Terry Gleason

“A circumferential highway system on abandoned railroad properties, to ease two traffic bottlenecks”  A plan to convert two rail trails into roads to divert traffic around Bedford Center and circumvent the VA Hospital grounds may soon be voted on for initial approval.

The Chair of the Selectmen reported that Federal aid for the hospital road project might be available. The right-of-way in the proposal involves a total of 5 miles on the two rail trails, from Bedford toward Concord and from Bedford toward Billerica.

“One route would siphon westbound traffic coming from Rt. 128 and Lexington off the Great Road onto Shawsheen Ave. to the proposed new road. The route would loop south of Bedford Center and connect with Rte 62, the Concord Road.”

The second road project would bypass Springs Road, a direct route to Billerica which runs through the center of the VA Hospital grounds.

“Reducing speeds necessitated by the hospital grounds congestion would be eliminated.”
