Downed wires caused a major traffic mess in Bedford on Tuesday afternoon, and more than 400 Eversource customers were without electricity.

The Great Road was closed between Shawsheen and Brooksbie Roads for several hours due to a downed wire just west of the entrance to the Bedford Shopping Center. It reopened to traffic just after 6 pm, although Wiggins Avenue remained closed at 6:45 pm.

A nearly simultaneous downed wire caused a brush fire and the closure of Wiggins Avenue.

Bedford Police and Fire diverted traffic and urged caution, warning drivers and residents to stay clear of downed wires.
