One Giant Leap ~ Celebrating Apollo 11: Aldie Johnson

By Meredith McCulloch

The late Aldie Johnson attended Iowa State University, earning a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He went to Avco in 1957 where he became the Department Head of the Structures Department at Avco Rad in Wilmington. He was responsible for Experimental Testing at the time AVCO was developing the heat shields for Apollo.

In his autobiography, Who I Am (p.38) he described his working group as ”a hotbed of cooperative effort.”

In 1968, Johnson moved his focus and work to Teledyne Materials Research (later Teledyne Engineering Services) in Waltham where he retired as Vice President of Operations. Johnson died in 2012.

Editor’s Note: Meredith McCulloch has sought out individuals with Bedford connections who were part of NASA’s Apollo program – Click this link to learn more about her project – each of the interviews will appear separately, under the individual’s name, and will be collected in a single reference document once all are posted.
