With Ms. Elaine and her helper dropped the containers from on the balcony above the library’s second-floor stacks. A giant plastic tarp covering the carpet was surrounded by children and families watching each drop and guessing whether the container would protect the raw egg, or if it would “SPLAT!”

A record 10 eggs came through their ordeal unscathed!

Relying on both science and artistry, the creative young designers used varied packing materials including peanut butter and marshmallows (though not in the same container), pieces of actual egg carton, a spiderweb of plastic straws, and a handsome sphere constructed using the sort of balloon more often made into animals or crowns.

The contest is a feature of the Library’s Summer Reading Program, and each contestant earned a bead for their reading program lanyard.

At the end of the afternoon, Ms. Bethany announced, ”  It’s been a wonderful event to look forward to each year,” and wondered what new and inventive strategies the contest will draw in the summer of 2020.
