Editor’s Note: Davis School
Students, parents, and school officials will gather at the Lutheran Church parking lot at 8:50 am for a celebratory walk or roll to Davis School. Lane School rides are parent-led and are being organized at the neighborhood level.  We are seeking parents to serve as neighborhood captains to organize, promote, and execute rides to Lane from various neighborhoods.  Click this link and volunteer to lead a neighborhood ride or to sign your child up to participate.  If you would like to add a neighborhood to the sign-up, please email [email protected]. Most rides will be morning only. Each group will need to arrange to pick up the bikes in the afternoon.

Walking and biking to school is a great way for youth to get the physical activity needed for healthy bodies and minds. Students who are more physically active have better academic performance. Numerous studies have demonstrated that exposure to nature and free outdoor play can reduce stress and relieve ADHD symptoms.  Walking and biking to school is healthy for kids, healthy for communities, and healthy for the planet.

Healthy Bedford has many activities underway to further our mission to ensure that the built environment promotes wellness and health. On Wednesday, October 2, 2019, Bedford once again will join over 40 countries world-wide celebrating International Walk and Bike to School Day. This event, and others like it, is very popular with Bedford families. In addition to helping to raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling, these events emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment.  They also build connections between families, schools, and the broader community-plus they are lots of fun!  This year, rides are parent-led and being organized at the neighborhood level.  Get more information and sign up here:  www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0445AFA823A4FC1-international

We encourage you to celebrate by joining other families in your neighborhood, walking or biking to school together, or find your own path.  Even better, bike or walk any day you can.  Since Bedford does not have neighborhood schools, walking and biking routes can sometimes be a challenge.  If you cannot find a comfortable route at www.bedfordma.gov/bedford-in-motion/pages/student-sidewalks-and-trails, consider walking or biking part of the way.  For example, Lane families frequently use the Middlesex Community College overflow lot on Springs Road or St. Paul’s parking lot for walking and others use Depot Park on Loomis Street for biking.  Davis families can park at the Lutheran Church or on one of the schools abutting side streets and walk the remainder of the way to school.
