Digging in the Dirt with Stacy Kershaw ~ October, 2019 ~ It’s Bulb Planting Season!

October 29, 2019

It’s bulb planting season! Time to think about what types of flowers you want to see in your garden after a long, cold winter.

If you want constant color, year after year, naturalizing bulbs are a must in any informal garden–And a frugal gardeners dream! These bulbs return and even multiply year after year.

Here are five of my favorite naturalizing bulbs for our area, which are also deer and rabbit resistant:

Chionodoxa Gigantea – Glory-of-the-snow. This is one of the earliest bloomers out there. Oftentimes you will see it peeking out under the snow–hence the name.  It’s native to the mountains of Turkey and is a violet-blue flower with a white center. It’s small and spreads like a carpet.

Scilla Siberica – Siberian Squill. This is a beautiful small bulb with drooping, bell-like, deep blue flowers.

Daffodils, narcissus species.  Narcissus is a genus of nearly 50 species of bulbous perennials from Europe and North Africa. They are a must for any spring garden.
These daffodil types are almost pest-free. And unlike tulips, they come back year after year.

Hyacinth ( Hyacinthus Orientalis). If you’re in search of fragrant bulbs, this is a winner. They come in a variety of colors and grow 6-10 inches tall — a very showy flower and great for a cutting garden.

Allium Giganteum – ornamental onion. Another showy flower that is great for cutting. This is a tall purple flower that grows to 3-5 feet.

Bulb Planting Tips
•    Plant 6-8 weeks before the ground freezes.
•    Plant in well-drained soil in areas that will get mostly sun in the spring.
•    Smaller bulbs should be planted approximately 5” deep and larger bulbs should be planted about 8” deep.  Make sure the growing tip is up!
Happy Digging!!

Here are some fall pictures from my garden. There’s such great color this year!
