We’re INN: Windows of Opportunity for The Bedford Citizen

October 15, 2019

The Bedford Citizen is proud to announce that it has been accepted for membership by the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), a network of more than 230 nonprofit newsrooms producing journalism in the public interest.

INN’s criteria for membership include demonstrating a consistent capacity to publish “original reporting of high quality that is…public service in nature”; employing high journalistic standards for accuracy and fairness; maintaining editorial independence; and reporting for the general public. According to the Membership Standards of the organization, member organizations must also share and follow INN community guidelines for ethics and transparency.

INN began in 2009 as a collective of nonprofit news organizations focused on the future of investigative journalism.  Originally a group of 27, INN has grown to include more than 230 members whose mission is to promote the value and benefit of public-service and investigative journalism.  The INN website (www.inn.org) states that “Our community shares best practices, collaborates on stories, pools resources and receives cutting-edge training in professional, organizational and business development.”

Membership in INN has affirmed both the mission and the growth of The Citizen since its inception in 2012.  Teri Morrow, president of The Bedford Citizen’s board of directors said: “We have worked hard to meet the standards articulated by INN.   We believe that with our membership we are now part of a network that will strengthen our understanding of how to develop and maintain a robust, reliable, and professional news source for Bedford.”

Membership in INN has allowed The Bedford Citizen to apply for matching grants through NewsMatch (www.newsmatch.org).

Our second proud announcement: our application has been approved!

NewsMatch pools gifts from local and national funders to match small-dollar donations to nonprofit newsrooms across the country.  All donations received by The Bedford Citizen between November 1 and December 31 are eligible for the match, which includes any donation from an individual up to $1,000.  (The maximum amount a single news organization can receive is capped based on the size of the NewsMatch fund which has not yet been calculated for 2019 applicants.)   “We are thrilled to have this chance to enhance the impact our donors make,” Morrow said.  “Their loyalty and generosity remain critical to our future.  Our ability to participate in the NewsMatch campaign is a win-win for all.  Strong financial support means more sustained and comprehensive coverage of local news that is at the heart of our mission.”

NewsMatch is a national matching-gift campaign to grow fundraising capacity among non-profit newsrooms and promote giving to journalism among U.S. donors.  It is supported through an open collaborative fund at The Miami Foundation (its fiscal sponsor) as well as the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.  (A complete list of supporters is available on the NewsMatch website, www.newsmatch.org.)
