An Open Letter from Jon Sills, Superintendent of Schools

November 18, 2019

It is with a mixture of sadness, deep respect for all of you, and a bit of excitement about what the future holds for Sandy, my children, my grandkids, and me that I share my decision to retire at the end of this year.

My twenty years in Bedford have been a time of deep personal growth, sometimes daunting challenges, and exceptional pride in the work that our whole team- the school committee, school and district leadership, faculty and staff, parents, student leaders, engaged community members, and town leaders- have accomplished on behalf of our students.

When I arrived in 2000, I assumed that I would stay for three or four years and then return to a more familiar urban setting.  But the relationships that I was so fortunate to build, the quality of teaching, counseling, and coaching that I observed, and the humble, pragmatic, generous and diversity-affirming town culture that so strongly supported our schools made BPS the place to stay.

When I started teaching close to 50 years ago, I never could have imagined that one day I would have the privilege to lead such committed, talented, creative and caring educators.  It has been our shared values and passion, our common commitment to bring inspiration into our classrooms and to develop our students as thinkers, and to keep learning ourselves that have brought a steady smile to my face every time I’ve walked our halls.  And it has been our working together tirelessly to overcome the unjust obstacles that society places before so many of our students that has embedded that smile deep in my heart.

While I know that change can cause anxiety, I am so confident in our principals, in our new assistant superintendent and director of finance, and of course, in our school committee, that I believe that the good work that we have accomplished together will continue and that change will strengthen the Bedford Public Schools.

I look forward to making the very most of the next seven or eight months together.
