Presidential Tax Return Bill to Get Public Hearing in Massachusetts Legislature Tomorrow, November 6

State Senator Mike Barrett (D) Lexington

The Joint Committee on Election Reforms will hold a hearing on legislation offered by State Senator Mike Barrett: S.383, An Act restoring financial transparency in presidential elections along with other legislation.

The hearing will take place in Room A1 at the Massachusetts State House, at 1 pm on Wednesday, November 6.

Sen. Barrett’s bill, S.383, requires future presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns in order to appear on a primary or general election ballot in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Senator Barrett will testify in support of the bill. During the current legislative session, Barrett’s bill has gained support from 32 legislators.

Going back at least 36 years, Barrett says, every major party candidate for President of the United States has released his or her tax returns, a tradition that ended with Donald Trump.

Barrett contends that access to the Massachusetts primary and general election ballot is a matter within the purview of the state legislature.  “Let’s set reasonable conditions that serve the public interest,” Barrett says.
