The Bedford Bucs 5th grade girls travel team won four games in three days to win the Woburn Holiday Tournament last week.  The 5th-grade girls A Division included eight teams, Bedford, Dracut, Burlington, Chelmsford, Billerica, Haverhill, Marblehead, and Woburn.

The Bucs opened the tournament on December 26 with a win over Chelmsford.  The final score of the defensive struggle was 32-16. Ashley Cohen led the scoring with 12 points; Georgia Stathakis added 10; Isla Sheridan and Lyla Hollingsworth had 4 points; Delaney Bertos and Emma Hollingsworth also scored.  Stathakis and Bertos added excellent interior defense and rebounding.

The Bucs won two games on Friday, December 27, to advance to the finals.  Bedford faced a familiar foe in Burlington in the first game and came away with a hard-fought 36-21 win.  Hollingsworth and Stathakis were the difference makers, with their defense and rebounding to secure the victory.

Marblehead was the opponent in the later game.   Annie Rossi and Annabelle Davis contributed solid defense, and both scored in the 41-26 Bedford victory. All seven Bedford players scored to contribute to the win.

Saturday’s Championship Game was a match-up of two undefeated tournament teams — both Bedford and Haverhill were 3-0 — at the Kennedy Middle School in Woburn before a large crowd.

This game was a complete team effort, and outstanding defense was again the difference as Bedford held Haverhill’s high scoring duo to a combined 24 points.  The Bucs led 23-17 at halftime and outscored their opponents 26-11 in the second half for a 49-28 victory. Bedford’s fast break and ball movement were also keys in the win.

Cohen led all scorers with 20 points; Sheridan had 8; Stathakis, 7; Lyla Hollingsworth, 6; Emma Hollingsworth and Davis chipped in with 4 points each. Rossi added tough defense and rebounding.

One other key member of the team, Madeline McInnis, was away during the holiday break.

The girls are currently 3-0 in Metrowest league play.
