Charter and Bylaw Review Committee Votes on Recommended Changes to Bylaws

In preparation for their presentation to Selectmen on January 27, the Charter and Bylaw Review Committee met on January 22 and voted to recommend proposed changes to the Town Charter’s Bylaws.

General Changes to Bylaws

The majority of final edits to the Town’s Bylaws relate to general changes to the Bylaws.  Such changes include ensuring that bylaws are gender-neutral. For instance, the term Selectmen is replaced with Select Board to be consistent with its respective Charter change, which is expected to be approved. Other changes include abbreviating Massachusetts General Laws to use M.G.L. and capitalizing the “T’ in Town.

The proposed changes passed unanimously.

Specific Changes to Bylaws

The committee discussed the position of the Recreation Revolving Fund under Article 33, Recreation Commission. Selectman and Charter and Bylaw Review Committee member Ed Pierce spoke of his experiences with the importance of funds remaining independent from the control of the overarching Commission. The proposed change was tabled for a later discussion.

The majority of proposed changes were tabled to a later discussion.
