Looking Back in Wonder ~ The Winter Storms of 2015

While December 2014 didn’t stand out as being the kind of temperate that the Boston area experienced in 2019, Dan Brosgol wrote about an icy December 31 run along Bedford’s trails after an unseasonably warm holiday week.

By the end of January 2015, however, a series of storms that collectively challenged the Blizzard of 78 for snow totals began dumping snow on Bedford.

Winter storm Juno dropped tons of snow on January 27, 2015. It was followed by Marcus when it snowed from February 7 to 10, then Neptune dropped another blast of snow on Valentine’s Day weekend.

The Selectmen held their regularly scheduled meeting on January 26 but due to the storm, the meeting started at 6 pm with an abbreviated agenda.

The DPW preparations were underway the next morning and storm-related closings were legion / and The Citizen shared Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s storm prep tips.

After the blizzard, Kathy Clark organized a giant snowball fight on Bedford Common. and the Fire Department issued an urgent request that residents help identify nearby hydrants and clear the snow around them.

According to the DPW, Bedford’s 24-hour snowfall for January 27’s blizzard was expected to approach 24 inches, Governor Baker imposed a travel ban. and a Robocall announced Bedford’s on-street parking ban.

Wild Winter Weather continued into February

While not a ‘named’ storm, flakes continued to fall, and The Citizen posted a storm update on Monday, February 2, and snow totals brought clearing Bedford’s 850 fire hydrants into sharp focus.

Monday update: There was no surprise when school was canceled, and while regular trash/recycling was planned, residents were cautioned about leaving their barrels out overnight to make it easier for the snowplows. Schools opened with a 2-hour delay on February 9 with 16 inches of new snow on the ground, bringing the total to 72 inches in three weeks with a storm warning issued for late in the week.

NEPTUNE – Valentine’s Day weekend – Another top 10 storm

Art Smith and Rich Daugherty served a hot breakfast for plow drivers who worked through the night clearing Bedford streets and sidewalks on February 10.

MEMA and the National Weather Service predicted a storm to begin on Saturday, February 14. The weekend storm landed another 15 inches of snow on Bedford. Police Chief Bongiorno warned against snow removal (and IRS) scams targeting senior citizens

The clean-up:  MEMA’s Snow Emergency Operation Staging Area landed in Bedford

A temporary snow removal emergency operation staging area was announced for Bedford. After a request from MEMA through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), the states of Maine, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont have agreed to send a total of 28 front end loaders, 87 dump trucks, and 33 skid-steer loaders with operators and maintenance personnel, to support ongoing snow removal operations. MEMA’s staging operation used Massport land along Hartwell Road in front of the unused Navy hangar, and in the Middlesex Community College parking lot on Springs Road.

The visitors cleared Crosby Drive on February 19 as one of their final assignments in Bedford.
