Adults support student callers and prepare the follow-up mailings

The Dollars for Scholars 55th annual Phone-a-thon contacted Bedford and Hanscom community residents who pledged almost $32,000 according to chairpersons Alma Pomponi and Scott Dyer. Projected donations are expected to exceed $55,000.

The MITRE Corporation, Burlington Road, was the site of the telephone fund drive efforts for 131 Bedford High School student callers over the February 29 – March 1 weekend.   Students were recruited by Social Studies Department teachers, coordinated by Christine Butler, and worked in two-hour shifts.  Many adult volunteers stuffed the pledge envelopes sent to over 5200 residents.

The money raised in the 55th annual “Dollars for Scholars” Phone-a-thon is the principal source of funds for college scholarships awarded to graduating seniors by Dollars for Scholars.  Additional scholarship awards will bring this year’s scholarships totals to around $132,000 which will be presented at a reception held at the Bedford Glen DoubleTree Hotel on May 27, 2020.  “Dollars for Scholars” donations can be mailed to CSF of Bedford Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 585, Bedford, MA 01730-0585. On-Line donations are also accepted. Please visit the website www.bedfordma.dollarsforscholars.org.

Any graduating senior from Bedford High School, or any Bedford resident who is graduating from any other secondary school, or completes home schooling, is eligible for scholarship aid.  Aid is available for students going to four-year colleges, two-year colleges, or to schools for technical, vocational or specialized training.  Student applications are available now online, with the deadline of March 20.

The awards committee of scholarship directors and other local citizens meets in the spring to review the applications of students who apply for aid.  CSF of Bedford Dollars for Scholars seeks to award scholarships on the basis of merit with the amount determined by need, following the guidelines of the national organization.
