An abbreviated Bedford Memorial Day observance is being prepared for broadcast on Bedford TV, the community cable television outlet.
The traditional ceremonies, scheduled for next Monday at Veterans Memorial Park, were canceled several weeks ago when it became apparent that state-imposed limits in response to the pandemic would preclude holding the event.
A few days ago, at the impetus of Bedford TV Executive Director Katie Duval, the Patriotic Holiday Committee began assembling many of the components for a virtual observance.
Committee Chair Paul Purchia said he, along with Select Board Chair Ed Pierce and State Rep. Ken Gordon, have delivered Memorial Day remarks on the Zoom videoconferencing platform. Former Selectman Joe Piantedosi, Patriotic Holiday Committee vice-chair, recorded his traditional role of reading the names of veterans who passed away during the past year. A few other possible participants are also being recruited.
Purchia said Duval told him the recorded words are being converted to broadcast format. “We will air it on our government channel (Comcast 99, Verizon 40) at 11 am and 2 pm on Monday,” said Duval. The ceremony will be archived on YouTube.
