Covid-19 ~ When Life Gives You Lemons? Make Lemonade!

June 30, 2020

All right, there is a lot, I mean a lot of things wrong with life in our pandemic world.  Healthwise, economically, socially, and worry, are just the big ones.  There are countless other terrible aspects of all this.  I’m lucky, I know, knock on wood, but everybody in our house is healthy, and no one has lost their job.  I certainly understand that those two caveats afford the luxury of looking a little deeper, to look hard for the bright side of all this.  If you look hard, there are….some.

Personally, one of the bright sides was my daughter returning to be socially distanced at home.  She had just taken a job in Chicago, working downtown in a beautiful high rise building overlooking Lake Michigan.   The office was this great open concept building on the 30th floor, very easy to get to on public transit.   Pretty much a checklist of what not to do.   Socially distancing in a big city is always a challenge and her work allowed her to work at home.  The company made it the rule in March and sent everyone home.   Since she didn’t need to be in the office anymore she decided to head back home.  Apparently a lot of her friends and their families had similar ideas.  A bunch of her friends from BHS are all home and they have been able to reconnect in their own socially distant way.  We live on a cul-de-sac and a new word has entered our vocabulary; “sacking it.”  The kids set up lawn chairs in a circle all about 10 feet apart and just chill.

We were talking about this today.  She remarked that it was great to get the band back together.  They all know this is temporary, the lockdowns will end and people will scatter once again to strike out on their own into this new world.   In some ways the expectation of this being finite is what makes it so special.  “It’s like the last summer before we all headed off to college,” she said.

WineOnlineAlong those same lines, my wife has had bi-weekly mini-reunions with her five best friends from college.  They are very close and scattered throughout the country.  They try to all get together every few years and spend time together.  Recently they have started Zoom get-togethers, “wine online” is what they call their sessions.   It’s important to keep tabs on each other and these discussions are a great way to share concerns and just keep close.  The thing is the “wine online” is very tangentially related to the pandemic.  The truth is when we get back to “normal” there is no reason those sessions need to stop.  They are starting to think of adding rotating guests to their sessions, why not.

Again, I know how fortunate I am to have the security to ponder such things.   I would love to hear from people about how they’re making lemonade.  Stopping to smell the flowers sometime is a good way to keep your perspective.

Drop me a line, I would love to start a lemonade column.  [email protected]
