An Open Letter from Philip Conrad, Bedford Superintendent of Schools

Hi Everyone,

I am looking forward to seeing you at the Town Meeting tomorrow morning.  Please note that as I write this at 4:30 on Friday afternoon, the meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. on Sabourin Field at BHS.

Please check https://www.bedfordma.gov/town-manager/town-meeting for the latest information.

This was a busy week for our re-entry task forces.

Each school-based task force has been measuring classrooms to see if we can adhere to the 3’ distancing guidelines mandated by the state.  We should have clarity on this aspect of our plan soon.  At the district level, we continue to work collaboratively with the parents, students, teachers, administrators, and town officials who are serving on each task force.  This continued collaboration will be key to our planning.  All of our task force groups are continuing to work on our three tiered re-entry plan that includes plans for remote learning, hybrid learning, and an in-person learning plan.  We also had the opportunity to hear from the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education.  Commissioner Riley let us know that we can expect more information from the department soon.  As soon as we have that information we will get it to you.

One thing that the Commissioner did remind us about was the importance of completing the census.  If you have not yet done so, it is an important civic duty that would be very helpful to making sure everyone is counted. Please go to https://www.census.gov/ for more information.

A couple of next steps that you can look forward to in the future will be a parent survey, another faculty and staff survey, and some town-hall-style meetings so that we can provide and receive more information. The importance of this two-way communication cannot be overstated.  It is going to take all of us working together to plan for our children’s individual and collective success.

Thank you for taking time to read this and for your continued support.

I look forward to seeing you soon in person, via the computer, or by email.

Best wishes,

Philip Conrad, Superintendent
