In order to repair the Shawsheen River bridge along The Great Road, through traffic will be detoured from 8 pm on Friday, October 2, until 5 am on Monday, October 5.
“Businesses will remain open and accessible at either end of the detour,” confirmed DPW Director David Manugian. “Whether you’re headed to Jiffy Lube or Stop and Shop, you’ll be able to get there.”

The Great Road bridge over the Shawsheen River
Although the emblem panel on The Great Road’s bridge over the Shawsheen River says 1926, the bridge was built in 1903, with its exterior beams and northern half of the superstructure reconstructed in 1925 and rededicated in 1926.
The Great Road, also known as Massachusetts Rte 4/225, provides essential regional, inter-local and local connectivity within Bedford and the surrounding area.
The current project will remove the existing hot mix asphalt, and install a new concrete deck slab with an integrated roadway over the bridge’s superstructure.
Appropriate signs and police details will be used along the detour route. Signage will be installed as part of the traffic management plan highlighting this local access
“Based on the traffic volumes and the location of the bridge, a full or half closure of the bridge/roadway is not considered viable due to the extended time frame and the traffic and economic impacts that would result from a full or partial detour,” according to MassDOT’s Highway Division.
